Sara can you help me get set up with these logistics to apply for a grant. ________________________________________ From: chiefdefenders@pdap.simplelists.com [chiefdefenders@pdap.simplelists.com] on behalf of Sara E. Jacobson [sara.jacobson@temple.edu] Sent: Wednesday, January 19, 2022 4:07 PM To: chiefdefenders@pdap.simplelists.com; 1stAsstPD@pdap.simplelists.com Subject: Grant funding opportunities from PCCD - up to $250,000 across two years Dear Chiefs and folks on the 1st Assistants list, Attached below you will find a grant announcement from PCCD that they issued this morning. There is a total of $7 million to fund 30-35 grants up to $250,000 each to fund grants across two years, running from 10/1/22 to 9/30/24. I think these grants can be used to fund social workers and mitigators in an individual office, of across several offices, across that time period (among other things). Additional details to know: * The grant application is due soon-> 3/31/22, with prior requirements to register in the EGrants system (by 2/15/22) and with the Federal SAM system (by 3/18/22) I can help anyone interested with these logistics. * You can apply across multiple organizations, meaning with other criminal justice agencies in your county OR with other county PD offices, with a written memorandum of understanding by all groups. * You can submit multiple applications, but each application needs to target only ONE of the objectives of the grant, meaning that you can't apply and say that your project satisfies objectives 3, 4, and 5. The grant objectives include: * Work to identify and eliminate racial and ethnic disparities that impact fair and equitable treatment within the systems PCCD engages; * Provide support for effective, community-led efforts to prevent gun violence; * Increase the efficacy of state and local efforts to prevent crime and increase safety through interagency planning and collaboration; * Increase utilization of evidence-based and evidence-informed programs and practices to improve outcomes for individuals and communities; * Support healing-informed approaches to address the impacts of trauma and the needs of diverse populations; * Improve coordination of and access to services for people with mental health, behavioral health, intellectual disabilities, and/or substance use disorders who encounter the systems engaged by PCCD; * Increase availability of high-quality reentry programs and practices across the Commonwealth; * Enhance the quality and availability of services for all victims of crime, including those most vulnerable and underserved; * Increase the overall knowledge and skills among victim service providers, justice practitioners, and other related professions through increased access to high-quality training and professional development; * Provide law enforcement with the appropriate tools, training, and technology to assist them in building trust and improving the safety of communities they serve; and * Increase the quality, accuracy, and availability of data to inform state and local decision-making. If you look more deeply into the 'activities' PCCD envisions under the objectives, I think it is reasonable to interpret the following: * Under the 1st objective one could apply for funding for a social worker, particularly a social worker who focuses on pretrial alternatives or is a juvenile social worker. I think there's a fair argument to make to pitch development of a pretrial representation/early bail review representation project here. * Under the 3rd objective one could apply to fund a person to coordinate all diversion options (lawyer or nonlawyer) * Under the 5th objective one could apply for a social worker or a mitigator to improve the trauma-informed needs of our clients. There's also room under this objective for an office to apply for someone to develop an attorney wellness program for their office * The 6th objective perhaps most directly supports a proposal adding a social worker to connect clients to services * Under the language in the last objective about data through "the automated exchange of information" one could apply for a case management system if you don't have one, or to update your existing case management system I'm sure there are ideas I'm missing. Happy to brainstorm, talk logistics, or help coordinate across counties if folks in a region want to apply for a roving social worker &/or mitigator to cover multiple offices. I don't want this $7 million to go to other folks, when the need in this community is keen.
