Attached is Lycoming County's First Assistant PD job description.  Fortunately, I just hired an old assistant as First Assistant.  Persuaded my commissioners that, since she has 17 years of experience, to pay her mid 90's, equivalent to First Assistant DA who has less experience. My first assistant just put in his notice as well. We don't have a job description other than full time criminal attorney. The salary starts at $50,000 with benefits.

In Centre (4th class)  we have 2 senior assistant positions:  a first assistant and a trial deputy.  They are the same pay grade S55 (currently $51,812.80 to 85,033.73 -  2080 hours per annum and 26 annual steps per the attached pay scale)  The first assistant is administrative work focused, the deputy is  trial work focused.  This mirrors the DA's organizational structure that was implemented 4 years ago.  If you only have a First Assistant position, I'd combine the two descriptions I've provided.   We only split them because our current DA created the deputy position.  His first assistant was always an administrator (prepared budgets, managed their grants, etc.)

Our first assistant and deputy have all been internal hires and they come in at a marginally higher salary than her salary as an assistant which is a pay grade S54 on the attached scale.  With an external hire for a first assistant, personnel might let us go as high as the G step on the pay scale (currently $58,322 and change) but that would just be inviting dissention in the ranks.  Hiring outside for anything other than entry level positions here has historically been disastrous.

For 2022 the county is adding $1 an hour to every pay grade ($2080 for every 40 hour/wk employee).  So base pay for a First Assistant hired here in 2022 with 3 years' experience would be  $55,960.64 (S55C + $2080)

That said, we are in the middle of a county wide salary study so who knows what will happen in 2023.

As you can guess by the subject line, my First Assistant accepted the position with the state civil service commission.  In preparing for his departure, I reached out to our HR department.  They indicated that they do NOT have a job description (which I find odd, but they are the HR department, grand overlords of all things employment related within the county).  They did also let me know that the starting salary for the position is around $53,000 (notably about $4,500 more than what new attorneys for my office are hired as).

So here is my ask...

Can you send me the following: First Assistant PD job description; base salary for the position; county name and class of county.
