Some years ago, the Joint Government Commission on indigent defense was severely hampered by the lack of cooperation from the individual PD offices in providing statistics. I encourage everyone to do the survey and avoid a similar result.

Hello everyone,

Two things here, one is a reminder of the LBFC survey. The committee reached out on Friday to say that they've heard from some of you, but not from many of you. Filling out whatever information you can on the survey will be useful. Data from this report could eventually serve as leverage for more funding, but for that to have any hope, there needs to be some hard data.

They asked me to circulate the survey to you directly. You can find it here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/LBFC0421.

And, since I'm emailing anyway, I'll invite you to register for the upcoming Chief Defender conference, across June 28 and 29th in State College. I was out at the hotel last week, and I think you'll like it. Note that when you register for the hotel room, they'll ask you for your credit card. Do not worry about that. The room, absent any incidentals, will be charged directly to PDAP, not to you.

  * The conference is free, but registration is required. Please register here: https://forms.gle/QW1oCbxUWkP176ka9 .
  * This conference will take place on 6/28 from 9am to 7pm and on 6/29 from 9am to 3pm. Breakfast, Lunch, and dinner will be provided on the 28th and breakfast and lunch will be provided on the 29th. We have not applied for CLE credits for this conference.
  * PDAP will pay for your hotel stay on 6/27 and 6/28, but you must make your own hotel reservations. The Penn Stater Conference center is located at 215 Innovation Blvd, State College, PA 16803. You can make on-line reservations here: https://thepennstaterhotel.psu.edu/ or call 800-233-7505. The Block Code is PDAP21A.

And thanks to all who weighed in on my union question last week.

Hello everyone,

I write to let you know that later today you'll get a survey link via email from the Legislative Budget and Finance Committee (LBFC) of the PA General Assembly about public defender and other criminal case statistics and funding. The Committee is a bi-partisan, bi-cameral body tasked with collecting data. LBFC is seeking this information pursuant to PA House Resolution 2019-619, regarding indigent criminal defense. Attached below is a copy of the Objectives and Scope document that lays out an overview of the study.

They're asking for your help. Not every office will have every piece of data they're asking for, but any survey that collects whatever data it can about case numbers and funding will be useful. It's been many years since anyone attempted to get these kind of numbers.

So please fill out the survey. You may hear from the LBFC with follow up questions (especially if they don't hear from you). Note that this isn't a PDAP effort. We've provided some background context for them and promised to facilitate communications.

They're asking that you get it back no later than Wednesday, May 19th.

Thanks,
-Sara
